Retrofit Reality: Can You Add a Battery to an Existing Solar System?

If you already have solar panels on your roof, you're halfway to energy independence, but if your system is a few years old, you're probably watching your feed-in tariff shrink while evening grid prices climb.

Yes, You Can Retrofit a Battery

The short answer is yes. How you connect it depends on your existing setup, the age of your components, and whether your current inverter works well with modern storage technology. Retrofitting generally comes down to two technical choices.

Option A: AC-Coupled (Leave Your Inverter Alone)

If your existing solar inverter is working well and isn't very old, you don't need to replace it. An AC-coupled battery, like a Tesla Powerwall or a Franklin system, comes with its own dedicated inverter built into the unit and sits separately from your existing solar inverter. Your panels feed power to your original inverter as usual, and any excess is converted again to charge the new battery.

  • The upside: you keep a perfectly functional solar inverter, and it works with almost any existing brand or age of solar panels.

  • The downside: converting DC to AC and back to DC introduces a small amount of efficiency loss.

Option B: Hybrid Inverter Upgrade (The Clean Slate)

If your solar system is approaching the 7 to 10 year mark, your original string inverter may be nearing the end of its warranty like. In this case, it can make more sense to replace it with a hybrid inverter, like an iStore, Sungrow, GoodWe, or Sigenergy unit, that manages both your rooftop solar and your new battery from a single box.

  • The upside: highly efficient, since DC power from your panels can stream directly into the battery without extra conversions, and it tidies up your wall space.

  • The downside: a higher upfront investment, since you're buying a new inverter alongside the battery hardware.

Check Your Existing Panels First

Before committing to a retrofit, it's worth a health check on your existing array. If your panels are old, degrading, or affected by micro-cracks, adding a battery won't fix poor production on its own. Pairing a retrofit with a regular solar maintenance inspection makes sure your rooftop array is safe and generating enough excess energy to make the addition worthwhile. If you're across the border in NSW, a retrofit project may also be eligible for the Home Energy Saver interest-free loan.

Making the Call

If your system is relatively young, an AC-coupled battery is a straightforward, non-disruptive upgrade. If it's older, treating the project as a full system upgrade with a hybrid inverter sets your property up for another decade plus of reliable, efficient generation.
