Why Add a Battery to Your Solar System
A battery lets you store the solar power you generate during the day and consume in the evening, overnight, or when the grid goes down (where back-up installed), rather than exporting it back to the grid for a comparatively small feed-in credit.
That last point is worth a further explanation, because it's one of the most common misunderstandings we come across. Not every battery setup provides backup power automatically. Blackout protection depends on how the system is configured, including whether specific circuits are wired through a backup panel. If keeping the lights on during an outage matters to you, that needs to be part of the conversation at quoting stage, not an assumption you make afterwards.
Starting From Scratch: Solar and Battery Together
If you don't have solar yet, installing panels and a battery together is often more straightforward than adding a battery later, since the whole system (panel output, inverter, and battery) can be sized as one job rather than fitted around what's already on your roof.

Commercial sites tend to have different daily usage patterns to homes (often heavier consumption during business hours and lighter overnight), which changes how a battery earns its keep. What a VPP Is, and Whether You Should Connect
You'll see "VPP" mentioned across a lot of battery content, so it's worth explaining plainly. A Virtual Power Plant links your battery into a network of other connected batteries, allowing your provider to draw on stored energy across the network during periods of high demand, in exchange for ongoing credits or payments to you.
Joining a VPP is optional, not a requirement of owning a battery. Whether it's worth it depends on your provider, your tariff, and (for our NSW customers) available VPP-related incentives on top of what's on offer from your energy retailer.

Battery Lifespan and What Affects It
Like most rechargeable batteries, solar batteries degrade gradually over their lifespan rather than failing outright. How quickly that happens depends on the battery chemistry, how often it's cycled, and conditions like temperature and where it's installed (a battery in full sun on an exterior wall works harder than one in a shaded, ventilated spot).
